Caring Hearts, Sharing Art

The eagerly awaited annual “Caring Hearts-Sharing Art” benefit sale for Friendship Bridge is slated for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3 to 6 pm at the Salida SteamPlant Riverside Annex.

Now in its fifth year, this immensely popular “Salida holiday tradition” fundraiser features a large collection of new and pre-owned artwork, sculpture, jewelry, fine crafts, and unique Guatemalan tipica--all for sale at bargain prices. Experienced shoppers arrive early for the best selection; and a juried assortment of the most exceptional wares also are sold by silent auction. Gourmet snacks, beverages, and music round out the afternoon of fun; and the event is a virtual sellout every year.

Friendship Bridge is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides microcredit and educational programs so Guatemalan women and their families can create their own solutions to poverty. All of the goods in the Salida sale are donated; and all proceeds directly benefit Guatemalan families and communities via Friendship Bridge “Circles” in this and other towns throughout the U.S.

The “Caring Hearts-Sharing Art” sale is one of several popular events held annually by the Salida Circle of Friendship Bridge. For more information about this innovative program, visit www.friendshipbridge.org

Tango enthusiasts and Tango curious!

Please join us for an evening of Argentine Tango!

Thursday, July 9, 2009
Where: Rich Tyler and Roberta Smith's studio in Poncha Springs.
118 Halley's Alley (near CR 120 and Hwy 285 in Poncha Springs)

Class 7-8:30pm
Guided Practica 8:30 - 9:30pm
(see description below)
NO PARTNER NECESSARY!

$10-15 (sliding scale)
Pre-registration is desired. Pay at the event. Please email robynengel@gmail.com or call Rebecca at 719-539-2321

This evening has been designed to be all inclusive! This means that no
matter the dance level you will benefit.

7:00 - 8:30pm *The Class* The first half an hour of this class will give absolute beginners a great introduction to Argentine Tango, and for the more seasoned dancers it will be a helpful refresher. In the following hour of the class we will build on information and movements taught in the beginning. We will work on a series of movements that will begin simple and continue to get more challenging.

We will cover the following elements: *the organic tango embrace* as the crux of communication, *exercises* in class with partners as well as some you can do at home on your own, *technique* that will begin to reveal the magic of the connection between leader and follower, and the importance of *dissociation *and* hip rotation* for both leaders and followers.

8:30 - 9:30pm *The Guided Practica*(practice). Adrian and Robyn will DJ music, answer questions, and perform. If there is desire for more advanced material we can give out more information one on one during the practica. We welcome any questions. Especially questions about musicality and musicality in dancing as Adrian is also a Tango musician.

Adrian and Robyn come to us from San Francisco where they are popular social dancers and occasional teachers. Their dancing is described as creative, fluid, playful, and musical. Robyn has been very involved in the San Francisco Tango community since she fell in love with the Tango four years ago. She has taught with Sean Dockery, Ben Thoma, and Charity Lebron. Adrian is an engineer turned musician. He co-founded Trio Garufa, the most danceable Argentine Tango ensemble in California. He spends a lot of time in Buenos Aires. There, he studied the dance with Marcelo Varela and Analia Vega, Gustavo Naveira, Sebastian Arce and Chico Frumboli. He has taught musicality classes with Homer Ladas and Trio Garufa.

Circus With a Purpose

Reading and discussion led by Jennifer Dempsey
Wednesday, June 24, 6:30 p.m. at The Book Haven in Salida

Circus WAVE is coming to Salida in July 2009, and as a prelude Jennifer Dempsey, director of the Salida Circus and founder of Circus WAVE (Widows Against Violence, Northern Ireland), will read some essays, articles, and stories drawn from her 12 years of working with the circus in Northern Ireland. This will be an informal event with open discussion, and refreshments of course! Selected books will also be available for purchase.

14 members of Northern Ireland's Circus WAVE will be visiting Salida from June - July 13. Ranging in age from 11 to 24, the Circus WAVE members will stay with host families from the Salida Circus and participate in circus and cultural activities, including the Fourth of July parade, hiking, rafting, camping, hot springs, etc.

Circus WAVE was founded in 1999 by Jennifer Dempsey, then tutor/performer with the Belfast Commiunity Circus. Along with other art therapy methods, Circus WAVE was established to raise self-esteem, trust and a sense of community for its young members.

The WAVE Trauma Centre offers care and support to anyone bereaved or traumatised by the troubles in Ireland, irrespective of religious, cultural or political belief. WAVE promotes a respect for life and an understanding of difference that is seen as enhancing rather than threatening. It affirms and acknowledges that there are ways of resolving difference other than through the use of violence and continually seeks creative ways of working through issues that have the potential to divide.

Artists' Junque Sale Tremendous Success!

On Saturday, May 30th, Salida ArtWorks held its first annual Artists' Junque Sale at the Salida Scout Hut in Riverside Park. Artistic vendors included: Carol Cross, Donna Wagle, Suzy Patterson, Sue Keyes, Melissa Meyer, Sally Mathers & Jan, Susan Spohn, Jan Nice, Darlene Louche and Hannelore Gabriel. Curtis Killorn supplied steaming hot coffee and his great mix of music gave everyone a lift in their step as they shopped. Sue Keyes baked wonderful health muffins and brought the iced tea, and Suzy Patterson passed around chocolate chip cookies

Although many of the vendors when signing up for the event, protested that they only had a few items for the sale.... Tables and floors were over- flowing with wonderful art supplies in every medium, beautiful art work, beads, antiques, creative clothing, books, frames, canvas, scarves, mat board, masks, pottery, watercolors, colored pencils, acrylic mediums, paint brushes, feathers, raffia, unusual kitchen gadgets, jewelry, lights, frames, molds, storage units, and even a telescope! Such variety and SO MUCH STUFF! Everywhere you looked there was a bargain --- and the more you looked, the more treasures you uncovered.

Frenzied buying started hours before the official starting time of 9 am. First the vendors started buying from each other, and then folks started wandering in from the streets eager to get a head start on the shopping crowds. By 8:30 am, many vendors were exhausted by the rush of sales! Customers were amazed by the quality of merchandise and the give away prices. Most folks thanked the artists for pricing their wares so reasonably. Several vendors actually "sold out", and most left the sale with only a few items to take back home.

Customers and vendors alike were both asking, " When will Salida ArtWorks have another Junque Sale??"

Salida ArtWorks would like to thank all committee members for helping with the sale, and all the wonderful vendors for finding so many 'treasures' to sell, and for the great turn out of customers. We look forward to holding another Artists' Junque Sale!

Nest- Leave Water Bottle Sculpture

A request for 'materials' from Jimmy Descant:

'Hey folks, I NEED plenty water bottles,
with caps, to create a piece of art for the first Farmer's Mkt. in June. I was going to do the building of this piece at the market but may take too long.
Someone gave me a name that is the working title, "Nest- Leave". It will be a hornets nest made out of bottles, I hope about 8' tall, and 6' wide.
I know most of you are boycotting buying small water bottles, but if you have some in the recycling or find them anywhere, please drop them off in the driveway at my house, 221 Palmer, anytime. And please pass it on. If I have more than I need, I'll make my walls of my display tent with them. Also any lengths of wire would be appreciated. Any of that left over will be donated to Merry Cox for her work.
Thanks, and much love from Jimmy & Penelope, on the art road tour, be back next week.'

Every Saturday: June 20 – October 10

Salida Art Works has rented a ‘selling’ site at the Salida Farmer’s Market for the 2009 season. Our vision is to provide a reasonably priced space for local artists to display and sell their art in this community. Artists may display only once or on several different Saturdays. We would like to encourage you to sell throughout the season by signing up for several Saturdays. We will have a chart listing the entire schedule so customers can find their favorite artists again!

We will supply a 10 x 10 foot tent –and you will supply the art and display materials. Cost for the entire booth is $30.00 per Saturday, and only $15.00 for half a booth space. By sharing a booth with another artist, members will not need a large inventory to participate.
